Foundation Core Program Therapeutic Swedish Massage

It's important for each student to experience the work they desire to do. When you speak from experience you become the testimony and the rest falls into place. Each student receives six massages from the instructor, included with tuition.

Foundation
The Foundation - consists of a combination of classroom work, clinical internship, and online bookwork, focusing on technique, body mechanics, and sequence within the scope of Swedish massage. Hands-on time is built into each class, allowing every student the opportunity and experience to perfect his or her skills in a professional atmosphere. During supervised hours you will hear an easy-to-follow lecture, see a step-by-step demonstration, and participate giving and receiving body work, each student receives introductory bodywork and coaching from the staff.  Also covered - Pregnancy, Stone and Therapeutic massages, Essential oils, and Eastern modalities. Along with the importance of getting physically strong.  After the completion of this program you will have met the educational criteria to be eligible to sit for the National exam.

Class meets
Day classes - once a week for seven hours
(or)
Evening classes - twice a week for three and a half hours during the week
Entire course is five months (twenty weeks) .

Course Descriptions                                                  
Supervised education
Hands on instruction include: 200 hours
Massage and bodywork assessment, theory and application
Within the scope of Swedish massage - techniques and strokes - compression, palming, cupping, flicking, friction, gliding, hair pulling, jostling, kneading, percussion, pinching, rocking, shaking, traction, and vibration. Stretching and lengthening of the muscles and their groups involving joint movement for full range of motion, assisted and unassisted static stretching, passive stretching for the purpose of reducing muscle cramping, which benefits both client and therapist. Included in this program; Thai chi, and introduction to the basics of Essential oils, Pregnancy , and Stone massages.


The anatomy and physiology is inter-grated with the massage we do not except credit transfers from other courses.

Distance education:
On line instruction includes: 300 hours
Ethics and business practices
Code of ethics, standards, scope of practice with the requirements of massage therapy, the importance of client confidentiality and the basic psychological and physical dynamics of practitioner- client relationships. Legal and ethical parameter of scope of practice, planning strategies for single and multiple sessions, and session record keeping practices. How to build your practice and have return clients emphasizing the importance of physical fitness, breathing and nutrition. Lessons in grace, hygiene, and personal attributes, stance and body movement. More on ethics and business instruction.

Anatomy, physiology and kinesiology                                         
Anatomical direction, planes of division and body cavities. General knowledge of the ten body systems and processes through the study of anatomy and physiology and its correlation with massage therapy. Standard Deviants Anatomy 1 and 2, chemistry 1 DVD's, Trail guide text and workbook series will be utilized for the at home work. First Aid and CPR requirements are defined.

Pathology                                                                       
Medical terminology, signs and symptoms of disease, psychological and emotional states (depression, anxiety, grief), effects of physical and emotional abuse and trauma, and factors of/alleviation of disease (biological, psychological, environmental).  Modes of contagious disease transmission (blood, saliva), effects of life stages (childhood, adolescence, and geriatric), indications, contraindications and cautions for massage therapy, the principles of acute chronic conditions and the body's natural ability to heal itself.                                                                     

Externship                   
Each student is required to keep track of his or her at-home completed work, not less than 300 hours including above subjects and bodywork will be accepted. Proper forms with logged hours need to be turned in before taking the final exam.

Final exam
The open book final exam is completed on-line and consists of true/false and multiple choice questions. All questions are highlighted and discussed throughout the program.

After the successful completion of the Foundation Program the student recieves a
Certificate of Completion from Trinity School of Therapeutic Massage, Licensed by the State of Michigan.

The CMT is then eligible but not required to sit for the National exam
